North Carolina: online casino, sweepstakes and sports betting law
North Carolinians have been able to bet on sports online since 11 March 2024, with the State Lottery Commission as regulator. Casino games for money are another matter. G.S. 14-292 makes playing or running a game of chance a misdemeanor unless the lottery or another listed exception covers it. Sweepstakes machines are banned under G.S. 14-306.4, but no law we found targets online sweepstakes casinos.

Not legal. Under G.S. 14-292, running or betting on any game decided by chance, with money or other valuables at stake, is a Class 2 misdemeanor. Exceptions are limited to the State Lottery (Chapter 18C) and Parts 2 and 4 of Article 37.

Sweepstakes casinos
No ban found
We found no law that bans online sweepstakes casinos. The sweepstakes statute, G.S. 14-306.4, outlaws electronic sweepstakes machines that show game play, whether or not they run off a server. That law is aimed at machines, not online casinos (checked 19 Oct 2026).

Online sports betting

Live since 11 Mar 2024. The State Lottery Commission regulates online sports betting under S.L. 2023-42, which allows no more than 12 interactive operators.
