Montana: online casino, sweepstakes and sports betting law
Montana takes a hard line on online gambling. Its code, MCA 23-5-112, treats an online casino that takes and pays out any kind of currency as banned internet gambling, and that covers sweepstakes casinos. Sports betting is legal, but only through the Montana Lottery, and a phone bet has to be placed while you are inside an approved lottery location. Only an online casino that uses no currency at all falls outside the ban.

Real-money online casino
Not legal
Online casinos are illegal. MCA 23-5-112 says online casinos, under any name, count as internet gambling and are prohibited, and it lists internet gambling as an illegal gambling enterprise. The one exception is an online casino that uses no currency at all, which the law does not treat as gambling.

Sweepstakes casinos
Banned
Banned in effect. Under MCA 23-5-112, any online casino that lets players bet and get paid in any form of currency is prohibited internet gambling, which reaches sweepstakes casinos. Only a site with no currency of any kind falls outside the ban.

Online sports betting
Restricted
The Montana Lottery runs sports betting. By statute (MCA 23-7-103), a mobile bet counts only if it is placed inside one approved sports wagering facility, confirmed by geolocation. There is no statewide online betting.
